A crown also called a cap, is a hollow, artificial tooth used to cover a damaged or decayed tooth. Crowns can also cover a discolored or misshapen tooth. A tooth that has been fixed with a crown will look like a natural tooth.
Dental technology is constantly improving, allowing new and faster treatment options. For example, CEREC technology allows your dentist to create dental restorations, including dental crowns, and complete them in a single visit. Before CEREC Same-Day Crowns, you would have to visit the office multiple times for treatments and impressions, and typically involved a temporary crown that could break or cause problems.
Your dentist will prepare your tooth for the dental crown, but instead of uncomfortable dental impressions, your dentist will digitally scan your mouth to create your dental crown. Our CEREC machine makes your dental crown to the exact specifications needed for a perfect fit. The dental crowns created with our in-house CEREC machine are just as durable as crowns created by dental labs but with the ease and comfort of a single visit to Phi Dental Care.
If your tooth is damaged but not lost, a crown can be used to restore its shape, appearance, and function. For example, you may need a crown if you have a root canal, a large filling in a tooth, or a broken tooth.
When you arrive for your appointment, you will be given a local anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable. To make room for the crown, we will file down the tooth that needs to be restored and then take an impression of the filed-down tooth and nearby teeth. This impression is used to custom make your final crown. We use digital technology at Phi Dental Care and can usually skip this step when using our CEREC same-day crown machine. A temporary crown may be placed over the tooth that needs to be restored if necessary. The temporary crown protects your tooth until the final crown is ready. Later that day (or on your next visit), we replace the temporary crown with the final crown and check to ensure the crown is the right fit, shape, color, and bite.
